Common Traffic Violations We Defend Against

Understanding Florida’s “Dangerous Excessive Speeding” Law: What Changed in 2025

In 2025, Florida enacted the “Dangerous Excessive Speeding” law under Fla. Stat. § 316.1922, which permanently changed how the state handles extreme speeding cases. Under this statute, driving 50 mph or more over the posted limit or driving 100 mph or more in a dangerous manner is no longer a civil traffic infraction, but a misdemeanor.

A first offense is punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine for a first offense. A second conviction within five years triggers harsher penalties, including mandatory license revocation. Because this is a crime, a guilty plea can result in a permanent criminal record. You can’t simply pay a fine online and move on.
